Once Upon a Reader Program

Lake Agassiz Regional Library is pleased to announce that each of its 13 branch libraries will participate in the 2014-2015 Once Upon a Reader program, a statewide early literacy initiative.

Once Upon a Reader is a one-book program, where chosen book titles have a Minnesota connection and highlight the importance of reading and sharing literature with preschool-aged children.

The 2014-2015 title featured by Once Upon a Reader is “Moo!” written by David LaRochelle and illustrated by Mike Wohnoutka. “Moo!” is the winner of the 2014 Minnesota Book Award in Children’s Literature. Free copies of “Moo!” will be distributed by LARL, though the program, to area preschool-aged children and children involved in area Head Start programs.

Lake Agassiz Regional Library branches will host various reading celebration events in coordination with the Once Upon a Reader program in spring and summer of 2015. The feature event, presentation and puppet show by author LaRochelle and illustrator Wohnoutka, will take place on Thursday, April 2 at 9:30 a.m. and again at 1:30 p.m. at the Probstfield Center for Education, 2410 14th St. S, Moorhead, MN.

The Book BannerAll area children and their caregivers are invited to this one-of-a-kind presentation featuring Cow, the book’s title character. After interviewing Cow about her travels, LaRochelle and Wohnoutka will share a puppet show retelling of “Moo!” and get everyone dancing with some original music, and follow up with a group storytelling and drawing activity. Suitable for families and groups with children ages 0-6, the presentation lasts approximately 45 minutes. Contact the Moorhead Public Library, 118 5th St. S., with questions or for more information: 218-233-7594.

Once Upon a Reader is sponsored by the Council of Regional Public Library System Administrators (CRPLSA) and funded by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund through the Clean Water Land and Legacy Amendment.
