Virginia Mae Hope, a native of Winnebago, Minnesota, was a member of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) during WWII. WASP flew planes and performed wartime duties in the United States, thus freeing male pilots for combat. In 1977, Congress recognized the WASP asmilitary pilots and granted them veteran status.
