Heather A. Slomski, winner of the 2014 Iowa Short Fiction Award, will give a reading of her novel-in-progress, The Starlight Ballroom, which takes place in contemporary Krakow and explores the fictionalized, somewhat fantastical story of the lives and deaths of her paternal grandparents. After the reading she will hold a short Q and A session, then lead attendees through a few writing prompts in order to inspire their own imaginative takes on a person or place in their family histories.
Heather A. Slomski is a fiscal year 2013 recipient of an Artist Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature; and by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Her story collection, The Lovers Set Down Their Spoons will published by University of Iowa Press in the fall.
