Library Assistant (Collection Development) – Regional Office, Moorhead, MN (30 Hours/Week)

This is a first-level position that supports the mission of Lake Agassiz Regional Library to enrich lives and strengthen communities; the position requires contact with library staff.  Performs work consisting of a variety of clerical tasks related to inter-library loan and the acquisition, cataloging, processing, and routing/rotation of library materials.

Essential Duties:

Acquisitions & Cataloging

  • Order materials using appropriate software.
  • Check incoming library materials against invoices.
  • Update funding information and status of on-order items.
  • Assign fund account codes to invoices and submit them to the Business Office.
  • Maintain donation paperwork.
  • Find and import appropriate bibliographic records.
  • Edit bibliographic records when appropriate.
  • Create item records.
  • Print spine and book labels with appropriate information.
  • Maintain periodical orders, making yearly changes as needed.

Interlibrary Loan

  • Place, receive and fill requests for materials through local library catalog & interlibrary loan.
  • Create temporary records to facilitate the circulation of ILL materials.
  • Process overdues and billing for overdue library materials.
  • Receive payment of service charges and other fees.
  • Discharge materials and prepare them for return to loaning libraries.
  • Pack and unpack materials for delivery.
  • Compile statistical data for reports.


  • Prepare new materials for use by attaching various labels, jackets, stickers, and stamps.
  • Mend library materials where possible by replacing jackets, gluing bindings, repairing pages, and ordering replacement parts when necessary.


  • Prepare rotations, pack and unpack new materials for all branches & LINK Sites; route requested and rotation items to specified locations.
  • Move tubs/boxes of library materials from area to area within the building.


  • Collect/process/deliver/sort/distribute mail to/from the post office.
  • Opening and closing procedures for the regional office.
  • Assists customers by directing questions to appropriate staff.
  • Responsible for keeping workspace clean and attractive.
  • Scanning and packing books for Better World Books.
  • Perform discard procedures for library materials that have been withdrawn.
  • Assist in establishing policies and procedures.
  • Work as a Library Assistant in other regional office departments/areas as trained.
  • Participate in Regional Library teams, committees and projects.
  • Attend meetings and training as required.
  • Assist in training staff and overseeing volunteers.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

  • A high school diploma.
  • Library, customer service, or related work experience preferred.
  • A valid driver’s license.

Language Ability:

Able to communicate clearly using English, both written and oral.

Work Environment:

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.

The work schedule includes day hours Monday-Friday.

  • Able to stand, walk, crouch, stoop, squat, twist, climb, push/pull, up to 40 lbs.
  • Able to use hands to grasp a barcode scanner and keyboard for extended periods of time.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job are close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Able to use a dolly to safely move tubs of books from one part of the building to another.
  • Ability to drive to other locations as needed.

Working Conditions:

30 hours per week. Salary:   $12.17 per hour
