Library Director – Detroit Lakes, MN Public Library
Summary: This is a leadership and supervisory position supporting the mission of Lake Agassiz Regional Library to enrich lives and strengthen communities. Works under the direction of the Executive Director and with an administrative team to oversee library operations across the region. Responsible for day-to-day operation of the Detroit Lakes Public Library as well as general supervision of, and support to, assigned branches and LINK Sites.
Supervisory Duties:
- Directly or indirectly supervises staff in assigned locations, providing support and training
- Fosters a supportive, encouraging and positive team and work environment
- Plans, delegates, schedules and directs work of subordinate staff, and volunteers
- Hires, discharges, and disciplines in conjunction executive director and HR director
Essential Duties:
- Creates excellent customer experiences by providing positive interactions
- Mediates and resolves customers complaints and concerns
- Works with LARL employees to create and ensure a cohesive training experience
- Provides, trains and mentors staff in the provision of library reference services, including reader’s advisory, interlibrary loan, library instruction, and information and referral services, fostering information literacy
- Acts as ex-officio member of local library boards and as a consultant to Friends of the Library and other groups supporting the mission of the library
- Representative to the City in matters relating to the library building, including maintenance, repairs, safety and equipment
- Recognizes security risks and thefts to ensure a safe and secure environment
- Cultivates relationships and partnerships with community, agencies, organizations, and schools to promote the library and meet community needs
- Identifies, pursues and executes outside funding opportunities in conjunction with executive director
- Supports community needs by overseeing, planning and executing meaningful and purposeful library programs or workshops in the library and through outreach in the community
- Works in conjunction with the Marketing Director to plan, develop and implement public relations and marketing initiatives, including the use of social networking sites, to promote the library and its services
- Responsible for keeping the library looking clean and attractive
- Advocates for local, statewide and national issues that may affect library services and the community
- Participate in regional library committees, including the development and evaluation of the strategic plan, policies, procedures, and guidelines at the direction of the Executive Director
- Oversee purchase and maintenance of furniture and equipment in assigned locations
- Other duties consisting of similar and related tasks or of a logical work assignment to the position as directed by the Executive Director

Education/Experience/License Requirements:
- 4-year college degree (BA/BS)
- Masters in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited program
- 3-5 years library supervisory experience
- A valid driver’s license and ability to travel frequently to other branch libraries required
Language Ability:
Able to communicate clearly using English, both written and oral
Work Environment:
- The noise level is usually quiet with exceptions during programs or events
- The work schedule includes days, evenings and weekend hours
- Must be willing to work a flexible schedule
- This position requires in-person work

- Able to stand, walk, crouch, stoop, squat, twist, climb, push/pull, up to 40 lbs
- Able to use hands to grasp a barcode scanner and keyboard for extended periods
- The ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and/or other sounds
- Clarity of vision at approximately 20 inches or less (i.e., working with small objects or reading small print), including use of computers
- Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. This is not just the ability to see a person or object, but the ability to recognize features as well
- Must own transportation to drive to other locations as needed

Salary: $70,000 to $83,000 per year
