Maria by Michelle Moran

How much of the movie The Sound of Music is actually fact? As it turns out, some of it is a fictionalized “biography” of Maria von Trapp.

Maria really was on the way to becoming a nun when she was asked to be a tutor for the von Trapp family. During that time, she met several children whom she quickly learned to love. She also married into the family, not because she loved Captain von Trapp, at least not at first, but because she thought it would be good for the children.

Yes, she made clothes for the children out of curtains, but no, they did not escape the Nazis by climbing a mountain. They did become a famous singing group, but the captain was not the firm disciplinarian that the movie made him out to be. These inaccuracies lead Maria to approach Oscar Hammerstein and request him to change part of the play before it hits Broadway.

This book is perfect for anyone who loves the movie and wants to know the “true story” behind it.
