Detroit Lakes Public Library & Detroit Lakes Public Schools Announce Student Library Card Program

The Detroit Lakes Public Library is partnering with Detroit Lakes Public Schools (DLPS) to foster a community of readers and to encourage literacy by offering Student Library Cards to all DLPS students in grades K-12.

This collaborative project, launching during the 2024 school enrollment period, offers another layer of support and access to library resources. Instead of a physical card with a barcode, the students’ new library card account will use their DLPS ID number. For example, a student with a DLPS ID number of 1234 would have a LARL student library card number of DLPS1234. With this code, students will have access to Lake Agassiz Regional Library’s collection of more than one million items, including books, movies, audiobooks and more, as well as downloadable eBooks, audiobooks and eMagazines which are available through the Libby app. The library also offers access to music, movies, comics and TV shows available via a free-to-use streaming platform

When a student visits their local Lake Agassiz Regional Library, they will be able to type in their student code just as they would with a physical library card. The same is true for online resources, which can be accessed using their ID number by visiting www.larl.org. The partnership gives students and families access to a wide selection of resources including physical and digital materials, computer access and free Wi-Fi.

“We are delighted to partner with Detroit Lakes Public Schools in launching the Student Library Card program,” said Pamela Westby, Director of the Detroit Lakes Public Library. “Our mission to enrich lives and strengthen communities aligns with DLPS’ educational goals. This partnership will foster learning and bridge the gap to ensure student achievement in and out of school. We believe this is an opportunity to impact economic advancement, academic success, quality of life and more.”

“This collaboration allows us to create a feeling of belonging and inclusivity for our students,” said Mark Jensen, Superintendent of Detroit Lakes Public Schools (DLPS). “We are glad to unlock access for students to the many books and other resources available through Lake Agassiz Regional Library’s collection through the Student Card program.”

Families can opt-in or opt-out of the student card at the beginning of the year as part of the enrollment process. Once students opt-in, they are automatically registered in the program for that school year upon enrollment. Accounts expire at the beginning of the next school year, so students can access library materials throughout the summer. Families that opt-out at the beginning of the year are able to join the program at any time. LARL materials must be returned directly to the library, and the student card follows the same guidelines as the library youth cards. No late fees will be charged, but families will be responsible for replacement and damage fees.
