The Secret Elephant is inspired by the true story of a woman known as the Elephant Angel. Denise Weston Austin was a zookeeper at the Belfast Zoo in Northern Ireland during World War II. Among the animals at the zoo was a baby elephant with whom she shared a special bond. As the conflict intensified, Austin would carefully sneak the elephant out of the zoo and bring her home. It wasn’t always easy hiding an elephant, especially as she continued growing. This is a charming story about compassion, resilience and friendship that will warm the hearts of readers of all ages.
