Services

How will this move affect library services?

Our goal is for minimal impact to customers. Throughout most of the month of March, customers will still be able to visit the Moorhead Public Library’s current location at 118 5th St. S. to:

  • Pick up holds (books, movies, etc.)
  • Access public computers, printing, faxing and copying.
  • Reserve and use meeting rooms.

There will be a brief pause in services at the Moorhead Public Library while the library is closed from March 30-April 4. Library events will resume in April.

Will Interlibrary Loan (ILL) still be available?

Yes. However, if you typically pick up items at the Moorhead Public Library, there may be a short window during the transition week (March 30-April 4) when pickups will be unavailable.

Will new services be added at The Loop?

The new facility features several upgrades, including:

  • Podcasting equipment and resources and programming for entrepreneurs in the Spark Center.
  • State-of-the-art hybrid meeting technology
  • An indoor walking loop and children’s playspace.

Visiting The Loop

What is the address of the new building and what does the facility include?

The Loop is located at 450 Center Ave. in the heart of downtown Moorhead. It is a multi-use facility housing the Moorhead Public Library, a dedicated Children’s Library, the Spark Center and the Lake Agassiz Regional Library headquarters.

What are the new library hours?

The library’s current hours will remain the same with an exciting upgrade! When the library reopens in The Loop, Sunday hours will be added:

  • Monday-Thursday – 9 a.m.-9 p.m.
  • Friday & Saturday – 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
  • Sunday – 1-5 p.m.

The Walking Loop and Indoor Play Space will be available during the library’s open hours.

Where can I park?

On-street parking is available near both entrances on the north and south sides of the building with accessible (handicapped) parking options available in both locations. Additionally, a temporary parking lot is located directly west of the building.

Will there be staff supervision in the Children's Play Space?

Similar to outdoor parks, parental supervision is required for children enjoying the Play Space, with no staff supervision available. However, questions about the Play Space can be directed to library staff.

Where can I return my books?

Book Returns are located on the north and south side of the building and an off-site book return is located in front of the Azool Hornbachers.

Current Location at 118 5th St. S

Why build new instead of renovating?

A 2017 assessment found that the 118 5th St. S. location had reached a state of disrepair in which maintaining the facility was no longer sustainable. Building a modern library was determined to be more cost-effective than renovating. The City of Moorhead, which is the owner of both facilities, is in the process of selling the building at 118 5th St. S.

How is the new building funded?

The $41.5M project is funded by:

    • Voter-approved half-cent local option sales tax (passed in 2022)
    • Federal grant for the Spark Center for Entrepreneurship
    • City of Moorhead
    • Generous Donations and Sponsorships

Who is responsible for library operations?

Lake Agassiz Regional Library operates the Moorhead Public Library, along with 22 other locations in northwest Minnesota.

The Climax Public Library is closed today 2/2 due to maintenance.
