Sustainability 101 Series at the Detroit Lakes Public Library

Join the Detroit Lakes Public Library for a series of programs about sustainability featuring Sandy Gunderson from the Becker County Environmental Services.

Composting
Tuesday, September 6 from 7 p.m.-8 p.m. at the Detroit Lakes Public Library
Are you interested in learning more about composting? If you have a yard that generates almost any kind of green waste, you probably have the right ingredients and enough room to set up your own compost bin. We will look at different styles of composting to help you better understand which style works for you. Backyard composting, worm-composting, pocket composting, and more! Composting is easy, and with it you can cut down your garbage, as well as create a mixture that can be used to improve the soil. Discussion will include containers, location, worms, food, and more. You will leave with a better understanding of nature’s recycling process.

Recycling and Reducing Toxins
Tuesday, October 4 from 7 p.m.-8 p.m. at the Detroit Lakes Public Library
Get the basics of recycling and learn how simple changes in our everyday routines can reduce our long-term exposures to low levels of potentially harmful substances. Whether you’re looking to lower your exposure to certain potentially toxic ingredients in store-bought products or to save yourself some money, it’s easy to make your own less-toxic cleaners using common household ingredients and some clean, empty containers.  Come and ‘make and take’ some non-toxic cleaners and personal care products for you, your family and friends.

Holiday Creative Reuse
Tuesday, November 1 from 7 p.m.-8 p.m. at the Detroit Lakes Public Library
In the spirit of reducing waste, one can use items that are normally thrown or recycled to be turned into repurposed/upcycled decorations or presents.   It’s a great way to save some money and have some fun!  Who’s to say that the holidays have to be expensive? Rather than treating resources as if they are disposable, we will upcycle them and create something wonderful for the holiday season, and beyond.  Please feel free to bring items to use and/or share.

New Year, Zero Waste
Tuesday, December 6 from 7 p.m.-8 p.m. at the Detroit Lakes Public Library
Start out the new year right by moving towards zero waste! Learn about easy steps you can take to shrink your waste, and why making less waste makes the planet a better place for everyone. Topics include recycling, composting food waste, reducing packaging, waste diversion, reusable products and more. We will also be providing a make and take dry shampoo. This DIY dry shampoo will have no toxins and will be in reusable packaging that will leave a lasting positive impression on our environment. All supplies are provided.
