We Used to Live Here by Marcus Kliewer

We Used to Live Here is a masterfully crafted, labyrinthine, hallucinatory nightmare about a young queer couple, Eve and Charlie, who buy an old Victorian home in the gloomy Pacific Northwest with plans to flip it. The house has beautiful stained-glass windows, rural charm, a lush forest surrounding it and, as they soon discover, many secrets.

One night, during a blizzard, Eve is home alone when a family knocks on the door. The man tells her that he grew up in the house and wants to show his family his childhood home before they move across the country. Eve’s gut tells her not to let them in. She does anyway.

After that night, nothing in the house—or in Eve and Charlie’s lives—will ever be the same.

This book kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. I wish I could read it for the first time again. The twists and turns were unpredictable, full of dread and delightfully uncanny horrors!
