Greg Breining, A Hard Water World January 10-12

Greg Breining

Breining draws on a lifetime of fishing and outdoor experience. He shares his hilarious take on venturing out on first ice, the small cities and lavish ice houses that sprout up on northern lakes, the sometimes controversial sport of ice spearing and odd-ball celebrations such as Walker’s Eelpout Festival. Breining wrote the book, A Hard Water World: Ice Fishing and Why We Do It.

Check It Out! LARL Celebrates 50 Years with Eric Bergeson!

picture34 Check It Out! LARL Celebrates 50 Years with Eric Bergeson!
MN Author Eric Bergeson

Celebrate 50 years with Lake Agassiz Regional Library at an open house in your community October 3 through the 27 with Eric Bergeson!

Bergeson will tell tales of his history with the library and entertain with nostalgic, old time tunes on the piano. Refreshments will be served.

Eric Bergeson’s been loving the library for years. The Fertile, Minnesota native’s earliest memories include the librarian at the Fertile Public Library helping him find forbidden books (history) on the upper shelves; books meant for older kids.

He was once kicked out of a library (a simple miscommunication) and later found an original peace treaty drawn up by Teddy Roosevelt in a box at the University of North Dakota Library in Grand Forks.

“Even though a Google search may yield the result you’re looking for, there is much more whimsy involved with browsing the shelves of a library,” reflects Bergeson.

“Browsing is key. The Dewey Decimal system allows for a broad spectrum of consideration on a topic. You may find a random book or article that you weren’t looking for that actually teaches you something you weren’t intending.”

Bergeson utilizes the library to write on his laptop using the wireless connection, to read the newspapers and many periodicals and to employ his various research methods in preparation for writing. Bergeson has traveled, written and taught extensively. When in Arizona, Bergeson stays right next to the library. Living near a library makes Bergeson feel like he’s at home.

“The library is the community’s living room,” continues Bergeson. “No matter the stage of exploration, young or old, there’s something for everyone at the library.”

Celebrate your past and embrace your future with the help of Lake Agassiz Regional Library!

Meet Eric Bergeson, Minnesota author of Down on the Farm!

Living in a small town provides life-long education, entertainment and great food. Where else are funerals the main social event? Where else do you have a different accent for every neighborhood or family? Where else do people in their 80s still play a vital role in community affairs? Eric discusses the ups and downs of small town life in an entertaining talk.

Eric writes a weekly column called Down on the Farm which is published in 22 newspapers in Minnesota and North Dakota, is the author of five books and owns Bergeson Nursery in his hometown of Fertile, MN.
